Donald Burl Kelley, age 91, of Grantsville, WV, died peacefully in his sleep Friday, October 28th at Marietta Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born August 28, 1925, near Grantsville in the community of White Pine. He was the son of Francis and Mary Della (Grimm) Kelley. He was the youngest of 8 brothers and sisters including Virgil, Carolina (Barr), Gladys (Whipkey), Blenden, Genevieve (Ward), and Geraldine Kelley, who all preceded him in death. His sister, Jean (Yoak) Miller survives him.
Don is also survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Willa Lea Kelley. They have two children, Kathy (Lyle) Kerby of Grantsville, and Ron (Nancy) Kelley of Mocksville, NC. Don has 4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren who all lovingly called him “Pa.” He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
After high school, he served in the US Army in World War II under General Patton’s 3rd Battalion and saw combat at the Battle of the Bulge. Don graduated from Mountain State Business College and pursued a life-long career in banking at the Calhoun County Bank in Grantsville.
One of the highlights of his life was his recent experience with the Honor Flight Organization. He was able to travel with other veterans to Washington D.C., to visit the memorials and be honored for his service to his country. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to www.honorflight.org.
Don loved gardening and was especially successful at growing blueberries. The Calhoun County Senior Center and its employees also held a special place in his heart. He was a long-time member of the Church of God, and he was extremely proud of his family.
