Ernie Hartshorn, 90, of Grantsville, WV passed away at home, surrounded by family, on January 17, 2017. He was born on March 24, 1926 in Calhoun County the son of the late Everett and Josie Sturm Hartshorn.
He is survived by daughters, Sharon Lynch of Parkersburg, WV; Kathy Bailey of Grafton, WV; and Kelley Houchin and husband Jeff of Arnoldsburg, WV; former son-in-law Ed Lynch of Parkersburg, WV; seven grandchildren, Jim Lynch and wife Paula of Parkersburg, WV; David Bailey of Shinnston, WV; Shanna Bailey of Charleston, WV; Heather Rosier and husband Nathan of Grafton, WV; Zachary Houchin of Morgantown, WV; Matthew Houchin of Morgantown, WV, and Ashley Houchin of Radford, VA. Six great-grandchildren, Katie, Garrett, and Nick Lynch of Parkersburg, WV; Hennessey Fourtney, Gabriel and Jasper Rosier all of Grafton, WV; great-great-grandchildren Emery and Eliza Jennings of Parkersburg, WV; and honorary daughter Roberta Rinehart and husband Tommy of Big Bend, WV. He is also survived by his brother, Lennie Earl Hartshorn of Bolt, WV and sister, Elah Roberts of Parkersburg, WV.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Helen Wolfe Hartshorn on June 19, 2002. He was also preceded in death by his infant sister Ellieve; his brothers Dayton, Boyd, and Glen Hartshorn; and son-in-law, John Bailey.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Pacific Theatre as a Machinist Mate 3rd Class aboard the U.S.S. Cahaba. Following the war, he was employed as a welder by Hope Gas and retired from Consolidated Natural Gas with 42 years of service.
He was a founding member of the Bee Creek Hunting Club; a former member of the Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department, a member of Eureka Lodge No. 40 AF&AM, the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, the Nemesis Shrine, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Post 200, and the National Rifle Association.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping; he especially enjoyed fishing trips to the Williams River and Canada. He enjoyed reading westerns, gardening, playing cards, dominoes and checkers, hosting cook outs at his home, visiting Myrtle Beach and spending time with his family and friends.
Services will be Friday, January 20, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at Stump Funeral Home in Grantsville, WV with the Reverend Rick Metheney officiating. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Mount Zion, WV with military graveside rites. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Stump Funeral Home in Grantsville.
