Obituary for Myrtle Catherine Roberts (McCartney)

Myrtle Catherine “Toots” McCartney Roberts, 97, of Stumptown went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at her home.

Myrtle was born April 14, 1920, in Booger Hole in Calhoun County. She was a daughter of the late Sylvanus and Alice Goff McCartney.

She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Stumptown where she taught Sunday school, was active in ABW, and had perfect attendance for some 24 years.

She was dedicated to her six children whom she raised “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” And in turn, they were dedicated to her.

Myrtle loved the outdoors and would spend hours in her gardens, mowing her large lawn, and helping her children and grandchildren identify leaves and flowers for school projects. She showed concern for the environment by becoming a member of the Solid Waste Authority and, teamed with a neighbor, adopting a section of Rt. 33/119 near her home.

She was a Senior Olympian and won numerous ribbons and trophies for her athletic and dramatic abilities. She was very involved with the GCHS Band Boosters while her children were in band and was known for her hand-cranked ice cream sold at the Folk Festival Band Boosters booth. She valued education and made sure that all her children earned a college degree. Myrtle and another lady were the first women to serve on the Gilmer County Board of Education.

She accomplished all this while working full time first at Rubber Fabricators Inc. in Grantsville and finally as payroll clerk at Kinney Shoe Factory in Glenville.

Besides her parents, Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Bernard Roberts, and 18 brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her six children, Susan Bennett (Denny) of Craigsville, Sharon Wiseman (Steve) of Parkersburg, Pat Roberts (Norma) of Sutton, Sandy Rentschler of Berkeley Springs, Garland Roberts (Lois) of Belleville, and Jill Roberts of Tucson, AZ; her ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, Derek Bennett (Gina) with Matt (Haley), Caleb, and Seth, Kami Bennett, Kristy Langley (Sam) with Chad and Aric, Kara Tidd (Matt) with Emma, Peyton, and Madeline, Lynsey Cline (Jeff) with Jack, Melissa Roberts, Waylan Roberts (Stephanie) with Elijah, Jessie Roberts (Mike Johnson) with Maize and Adeline, Zach Roberts with Bodhi and Zetta, and Shannon Roberts.

The family thanks Linda Goff Brannon for her six years of loving help with Mom’s care. The family is also grateful for the excellent care provided by Hospice.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 7 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Stump Funeral Home and Cremation, Inc. in Grantsville. Funeral service will be Sunday, April 8 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Stumptown, WV. Interment will follow in Collins Community Cemetery.
